40th VMAs Celebrate Music and Crown Taylor Swift Queen Again!

The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) returned to UBS Arena in New York with a star-studded bang on September 12th! The ceremony not only honored the best music videos of the past year but also marked the show's impressive 40th anniversary.

While Taylor Swift undeniably stole the show, let's not overshadow the night's other highlights!

Swift, nominated for a whopping 12 awards, took home a record-breaking seven Moonpersons. This win solidifies her position as the artist with the most VMAs ever, surpassing Beyoncé's 30 (including collaborations). Her wins included:

  • Artist of the Year
  • Video of the Year (Burger King Award) for "Fortnight" (ft. Post Malone) (3rd consecutive win for Video of the Year)
  • Best Direction for "Fortnight" (2nd win)
  • Best Collaboration for "Fortnight"
  • Best Pop Video for "Fortnight"
  • Best Cinematography for "Fortnight"
  • Song of the Summer for "Fortnight"



"Fortnight" also secured the most wins for a male artist this year, crediting Post Malone. The 40th anniversary celebration brought back memories with nods to legendary performances and past award winners.

  • Eminem kicked off the show by redoing his famous medley surrounded by Shady look-alikes, reminiscent of his 2000 performance.
  • Katy Perry won the "Iconic VMA Performance" award for her electrifying "Roar" performance.
  • LL Cool J, the first-ever Video Vanguard winner, returned to the stage for a rousing hip-hop medley with Def Jam and Public Enemy.
  • Megan Thee Stallion paid tribute to Britney Spears with a powerful rendition of "I'm a Slave for You," even incorporating an albino python as a prop!

The night wasn't just about established stars. Several newcomers made their mark:

  • Sabrina Carpenter, a first-time winner, delivered a captivating medley of her hits, including "Espresso," "Taste," and "Please Please Please."
  • Chappell Roan took home the "Best New Artist" award.
